The Drowned Giant – refers to the short story by J G Ballard, wherein, the scale of a particular human body leads to its fragmented obliteration/cultivation. The artist’s works presented in this show display an affinity with this narrative. A fragmentation of the body takes place, obscuring figuration. A mono-print of spare text, a soft sculpture on the floor and a wall relief make up the seemingly disparate parts, which moves towards a description of a different figure/ground representation.
Monica Deo’s (New York) work employs the themes of social, political and artistic action of the 60’s and 70’s – the feats, failures and fallouts both historically and personally. Her soft sculptures border homage and condemnation.
Tony Payne’s (Los Angeles) works on paper consist of minimal text printed in various bodily fluids. The text is usually just one word, isolated as if it’s the last word in existence. They are deliberate, stark and ghostly.
Caroline Thomas (Los Angeles) works primarily in ceramic sculpture, some of which present an intentionally false verisimilitude and others that have a handmade abstraction evoking a sense of decayed naturalism.
